Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids were scheduled in June but didn’t occur due to an abrupt cancellation. At that time, Congress members were challenged to draft new asylum laws in just two weeks. However, President Trump recently announced those wide-sweeping raids are now scheduled to occur on or shortly after Independence Day.
According to the Trump Administration, at least 10 major cities would become ICE raid epicenters on July 4th. What cities will see up-ticked ICE activity in the next 24 and 48 hours have not been released to the public, though. In a press conference, Trump promised the removal of a “large number of people.”
The announcement comes only days after Congress gave nearly $5 billion in emergency funds to migrant detention facilities across the country, with a focus on border stations. A large number of immigrants from Central America, many of whom arrived as part of the infamous immigrant caravan that walked for months, are putting serious pressure at the border.
The House and the Senate recently fought among themselves to pass a new asylum measure, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) reportedly working hard to keep tensions low, earning the President’s praise. However, due to an ongoing holiday recess in Congress, the measure cannot be passed in time to address the current border situation for which it was actually drafted.
